Dar tried to sneak a note into my briefcase on Friday morning. It was in a handmade envelope fashioned of scrap paper, staples, and glue or something, addressed to

And here is what the note said:
Dear Dad
I really want to watch Star Wars. Can w secretly watch very sooon I love you
Dar.
She’s been asking about this for a while now. She has a Vader costume in their dress-up box, and she asked for a lightsaber this Christmas. There’s something very exciting about taking her level of moviewatching sophistication from Pixar to Lucasfilm,* but it will involve setting aside a time that Margo’s not around to ask questions and get jealous. Also, we haven’t yet re-watched it to see if there’s anything in there that might require delicate explanations…such as millions of voices crying out in terror and suddenly being silenced. She’s a sensitive kid, and I think the destruction of an entire planet could get to her.
On the other hand, I was also a sensitive kid. I think I saw Episode IV in the theaters, or so I’ve been told, and it came out when I wasn’t even 3 years old.
I think we can go ahead and do it.
What do you think? Anybody got any reasons that we can’t let our 6.5-year-old see the movie that defined our generation?
* Yes, I do realize that this shift, on the whole, does not necessarily reflect a step up in quality.

We’ve let Caleb watch all 6 episodes and he LOVES Star Wars. He is also a sensitive kid, but I wonder if he was more fascinated with the guns, spaceships and fighting, and maybe that kept him from really “getting” what was happening? I’, not sure . . . . I don’t know if that was helpful or not, but Star Wars is a big thing at our house for the moment.

Ok, both Morgan and Cooper have watched all the Star Wars – even the more recent ones. I think the basic Star Wars is fine. If she has any questions later, you can talk it out – she realizes that it is all fantasy with the spaceships and all – gofor it… She will probably remember the Dad time forever…
